Step #1: Don’t Skip Breakfast!

breakfastWhatever you do, you should be eating within 30 minutes of rising every single day – unless you are exercising within 30 minutes of rising and then you should eat within 30 minutes of finishing your workout.

Eating breakfast breaks the night time fast and sets your body up to burn fat throughout the day.

Did you know that skipping breakfast is a technique that sumo wrestlers use to gain weight around their mid-section?

When you skip breakfast – or go too long between meals – the hunger pangs you feel in your stomach are produced by a hormone called grelin.

And grelin makes your body produce cortisol and insulin, which are fat-storage hormones.

Cortisol in particular promotes the storage of fat around your middle, hence the reason sumo wrestlers do it.

So, you are not doing yourself any favors at all by skipping meals – especially breakfast!

The Dirty Little Secret That Kept Me Fat For Years

fatHave you ever stopped to think about WHY it was so (relatively) easy to stay thin or to lose those extra couple of pounds when you were a teenager?

I saw one of those internet pictures the other day that said “I wish I were as fat as I was the first time I thought I was fat.”  Seriously!!!  Right??

I mean what cruel twist of fate is it that makes every ounce of extra fat cling to your bodies like grim death or make every extra calorie that you happen to consume instantly appear on your thighs as you approach middle age?

And I know you’ve all heard the rhetoric – your metabolism decreases as you age making it harder to lose extra weight… Well, DUH!!

But WHY?  Why does that happen??

Here’s the dirty little genetic secret that no one bothers to tell you – which really stinks, because as it turns out, you can actually do something about it!

It has to do with your body’s efficiency as you age, or more specifically, how efficiently your body processes the nutrition – the calories – that are locked in the foods you eat.

Are you ready for this?  I’m telling you, I fell off my chair when I learned this!

As an adult, we are as efficient in this area as we are ever going to be at the age of 18.  The average, healthy 18 year old’s body is 90% efficient.  That means that if that 18 year old eats 2,000 calories in a day, their body is utilizing 1,800 of those calories in the function, rebuilding, restoration and regeneration of that body.

OMG-1Here’s the crazy part… By the time that same average person reaches 39 years old, research shows that their body’s efficiency has dropped to 22.4%!

Oh my goodness!!!  22.4%?

Now, that means that same person who now eats 2,000 calories per day is only utilizing 448 calories to run their body.

What happens to other 1,552 calories?

Well, it either has to be burned off through exercise (and I don’t know about you, but it takes a LONG time to burn 1,500 calories through exercise) or it is stored in the body…

That’s right…

AS FAT!!!!!

So let’s think about it for a moment…

Let’s say you are 39 years old and you eat a “typical American diet” with all its preservatives and artificial sweeteners and chemical flavor and color concoctions and your body is operating at 22.4% efficiency.  You eat 2,000 calories per day and say you workout and burn an average of 400 calories per day.  You think you’re doing everything right, right?

But, left unchecked, you can expect to gain a pound of fat every 3 days.  But of course that’s not what happens is it?

dietNo, see we don’t like the fat, so we go on a diet.

What generally happens to calorie consumption on a diet?  Sure, you eat fewer calories.

So, say you drop to 1,200 calories per day.  Your body is still only 22.4% efficient… Now your poor starving body is only processing 269 calories.

Your body was used to functioning on 448 calories, but now it’s only getting 269… What happens?

Your metabolism depresses to the new set point of 269 calories.

It’s an unsustainable model – you literally ARE starving your body to death!!

What do you do?  This is a genetic thing right?  You can’t cheat genetics!!

Well, no, you can’t, BUT the genetics at play here are defense mechanisms against all the crap in the typical diet that makes your body so inefficient in the first place.

What if there was a way to improve your body’s efficiency in utilizing the calories you eat to run your body instead of padding your thighs?  What if there was a way to trick your body into thinking it was 18 years old again?
